Short & Shivery

With so many spooky tales out there, I'm curious what made these thirty stand out enough to be part of 'Short & Shivery.' Was it based on personal favorites or what kids find most frightening?

Some tales felt really intense, even for middle grade. I'm wondering if the author intentionally aimed for a variety of scares, or if some stories might be better suited for older kids.
