The book covers so many eras and cultures—I'm curious how he chose what to focus on and what to leave out. Did he aim for completeness or storytelling?

The characters seem torn between different worlds, and it made me wonder how much of that reflects real Hawaiian experiences. Was that relatable for others?

The shifting viewpoints kept the narrative dynamic but also complex. I wonder if this structure was planned from the start or developed during writing.
