His artwork added so much atmosphere and personality to the stories. I wonder if the illustrations shaped how readers visualized these tales over the years.

A lot of these fairy tales have quite grim or moralistic elements. Was that typical of the original versions, and how do readers today interpret that darkness?

Considering there are so many versions and adaptations, I'm curious what motivated this particular compilation and what the editors aimed to highlight.
