Watching the characters shift from conflict to connection added layers to their relationship. Did the author intentionally build tension around their initial hostility?

The military backdrop added a layer of discipline and duty, but also danger and vulnerability. I'm curious whether that setting was driven by personal experience or a desire to add stakes.
