In real life, family secrets usually come with more suspicion and hesitation. Was this a deliberate choice to keep the story moving or a reflection of the characters' personalities?

The small-town atmosphere really added to the sense of intimacy and secrets. I'm curious if the setting was based on a real place or created entirely from imagination.
