William Wells Brown was an African-American abolitionist, novelist, playwright, and historian. He wrote Clotel, considered the first novel by an African American, and authored works in travel writing, fiction, and drama. Brown was active in abolitionist causes and was among the first writers inducted into the Kentucky Writers Hall of Fame.
