The city feels like a character itself, with its gritty streets and shadows. Did anyone else feel this added to the sense of moral ambiguity in the novel?

Leopold Tyrmand seems to blur the lines between hero and anti-hero. I'm curious what motivated this layered characterization.

The tension picks up again towards the end, but I felt some sections lingered. Wondering if this was a stylistic choice or just me.
