Kosho Uchiyama was a Sōtō Zen priest and abbot of Antai-ji near Kyoto, Japan. He authored more than twenty books on Zen Buddhism, including Opening the Hand of Thought, and wrote poetry in retirement. Uchiyama studied Western philosophy at Waseda University and was ordained by Kodo Sawaki.
