I'm curious whether this story was based on specific historical accounts or if it was more of a fictionalized retelling. What drew Melanie Benjamin to this particular event?

The depiction of panic and resilience seemed very real to me. I wonder if the author did particular research or interviews to capture those emotions so vividly.
