The Grimm tale is known for its darker elements, and the illustrations really emphasize that. How did the mood affect the way you experienced the story as a child or adult?

Many adaptations soften or modernize fairy tales, but this one stays true to the darker roots. I’m curious what motivated that choice from the author and illustrator.
