I loved the unique spells but struggled to keep track of all the rules. Did the author intend it to be mysterious or was it just underdeveloped?

The urban backdrop added a modern twist, but I wonder if the story would change much in a different city or rural area.

It gave the book a rich cultural layer I haven't seen before in urban fantasy. I'm curious what sparked that creative choice.
