There are moments where the narrative dives deep into ideas about progress and humanity, which can feel dense. Was this intentional to encourage reflection or just part of Pynchon's style?

Their voyage is both literal and metaphorical, but I’m curious whether the author was drawn to their historical significance or the symbolic potential of their expedition.
