Some characters kept me guessing about their true intentions, which added to the mystery. Was this intentional to keep readers on edge or just a byproduct of the storytelling?

The shifting viewpoints added layers to the story, but I wonder if that was mapped out early or if it evolved during writing to reveal different facets of the mystery.
