The depiction of imperialism and exploitation felt very raw and authentic, but also made me reflect on how these themes are handled today. Was that contrast intentional?

There were scenes that felt thrilling and others that were deeply moving or disturbing. I wonder if Birch aimed for this emotional range or if it evolved naturally.
