There was a lot of tension building early on, but the middle chapters felt a bit slower. Was that a deliberate choice to deepen character development?

The sense of everyone knowing each other's secrets added so much tension. I'm curious if the setting was inspired by real places or pure imagination.

The clues were subtle but felt like they pointed toward a particular character from the start. Did others have a different reading or was it obvious?
