The mood was so pervasive that I kept thinking about the characters' sense of longing. Was this emotional tone something de Bodard aimed for intentionally?

It kept the story mysterious and layered, but I’m curious if that was a deliberate choice to focus on present dilemmas or to mirror the unknowns of space.
