Considering Steinbeck's background and the era it was written in, I'm curious what motivated these particular themes and how they reflect his view of society.

The characters' personal battles felt so raw and real, but I wonder if others found it hard to connect with their struggles or see them as universal.

His use of language and dialogue really painted a vivid picture of the characters' inner turmoil — I wonder what choices he made to evoke such emotion.
