Farquhar's approach sheds light on the wildest moments of monarchy, but I wonder what drew him to these particular stories. Was it a desire to humanize these figures or to entertain readers with their misdeeds?

These stories make some of these figures feel surprisingly relatable or charismatic, even with all their scandalous behavior. It made me wonder how much of our perception is shaped by these tales.
