Orwell Essays 3: Shooting an Elephant

His reflection on the moral complexities faced during colonial rule feels very intimate. I wonder what pushed him to share this particular story in such a candid way.

Orwell’s description of feeling compelled to shoot the elephant despite knowing it was wrong really hit home. It made me question how often we act against our own morals because of social pressure.

His firsthand experience adds a layer of authenticity, but I’m curious whether he intended this to be a critique of colonialism or more of an individual moral reflection.
