Alcott is best known for her wholesome novels, so I wonder what motivated her to venture into darker, more suspenseful territory with these thrillers.

The characters’ secrets and disguises created a lot of suspense for me, but I’m curious if others found this aspect more intriguing or unsettling.

The atmospheric details felt quite classic, but I wonder if Alcott’s personal style brought a unique twist to the Gothic tradition.
