Her depiction of spirits feels more rooted in emotional truth than pure terror. Did anyone else feel this added depth to the haunting?

The detailed descriptions really brought the Gothic environment to life. I wonder if Gaskell based it on a real place or used her imagination.

The story being told from a child's point of view made the supernatural elements even more unsettling. How much of that do you think was intentional?
