The setting feels so alive and layered with secrets. I'm curious whether the author drew from real history or created a whole new world.

The characters are so morally complex; I kept wondering if their actions are justified or if they crossed lines I wasn't expecting.

There are moments that made me laugh out loud, but also scenes that felt really tense. It’s a tricky tone to pull off in middle grade — wondering how that was approached.
