The intense obsession drives much of the plot, but I'm curious whether this was inspired by real experiences or purely fictional imagination. How did the author approach making it believable yet unsettling?

The characters' motivations are complex, and I found myself drawn to them even when their actions were questionable. Am I the only one who felt this moral ambiguity?
