Longyear's depiction of alien enemies becoming allies feels so relevant today. I'm curious what motivated him to tackle these issues in a sci-fi setting.

The vastness of space and the isolation added a layer of tension and intimacy. How much do you think the setting contributed to the story's emotional depth?

The pacing felt well-managed, but I wonder if the focus on character growth was a conscious choice to deepen the message about empathy.
