A Modest Proposal

Swift’s proposal is so outrageous that I wonder what real social issues he aimed to highlight. Do we know what inspired this extreme form of critique?

The humor makes the serious critique even more striking, but it also made me uncomfortable at moments. Is this contrast part of the point?

The logical progression and detailed reasoning make the proposal seem plausible, which amplifies the satire. I wonder if Swift intentionally used this format to persuade or to parody persuasive arguments.
