The story kept me hooked, but that twist seemed like it appeared out of nowhere. Did others feel it was well-earned or a bit rushed?

The mix made for a unique world, but I wonder what inspired the balance between the fantasy elements and the bleak setting. Was it a conscious choice from the start?
